US futures are looking lower as overnight, rating agency Fitch downgraded the U.S. government’s top credit rating, cutting the United States to AA+ from AAA, citing fiscal deterioration over the next three years and repeated down-the-wire debt ceiling negotiations that threaten the government’s ability to pay its bills. The US dollar fell vs. rival currencies, stock futures ticked down and Treasury futures rose after the announcement. The news comes after stock averages finished mixed on Tuesday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed higher for the 16th time in the last 17 trading days, hitting a new all-time on a total return basis for the first time since January 4, 2022, Oil prices rose after weekly American petroleum Institute data reported the biggest weekly crude draw in at least 40 years. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index tumbled -768 points or 2.3% to 32,707, the Shanghai Index fell -29 points to 3,261, and the Hang Seng Index declined -493 points or 2.47% to 19,517. In Europe, the German DAX is lower by -175 points to 16,061, while the FTSE 100 is down around -100 points or 1.25% to 7,569. The earnings barrage continues this busy week of results (details below).
