U.S. futures are mixed as investors prepare for earnings in large cap industrials and Pharma this morning. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 38,000 for the first time in history on Monday and the S&P 500 also closed at a new all-time high for a 2nd straight day. Just massive strength to start the year for broader averages, as @Barchart tweeted last night that “70% of S&P 500 stocks are now trading above their 200D moving average.” With the FOMC meeting next week (the Fed is in their blackout period this week ahead of the meeting), attention turns to GDP and PCE inflation data later this week (the Fed’s preferred inflation reading) as well as earnings. More than 70 S&P 500 companies, including Tesla, AT&T, Johnson & Johnson, Visa, General Electric, and Intel, are scheduled to report this coming week. The following week will be even more packed with more than a quarter of the index’s components will publish results, including Microsoft, Apple, Exxon Mobil, Boeing, and Qualcomm. This morning so far, shares of GE, MMM, DHI in the industrials space are all trading notably lower following results and guidance. Dow component JNJ also reported results (details of all below). In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index dropped -29 points to 36,517, the Shanghai Index rose 14 points to 2,770, and the Hang Seng Index gained 392 points to 15,353 on reports China is considering a stock market rescue package (more below). The Bank of Japan kept rates unchanged as expected. In Europe, the German DAX is down slightly at 16,679, while the FTSE 100 dips 8 points to 7,480. Bitcoin prices continue to stumble, falling another 2% to below $39,000 ($10K off January highs).
